The focus of this research is a case study of the Chinese school of Fo Guan Shan temple of WA. Based on the research, 75% of the parents send children to the Fo Guan Shan Temple to learn Mandarin and the culture, and only 25% are because the school location is close. The education at school is high-quality, and it emphasizes the importance of the moral values of Confucianism and Buddhism. For example, the school would have a lesson of “Di Zi Gui” at assembly every first week, and a lesson of “Through the Eyes of the Little Monk” every second week. Due to the fact that these moral values correlates to traditional Chinese characters, the school will remain teaching traditional characters even when the surrounding environment inclines to simplified characters. The teachers at school are all from Taiwan. The teaching material introduces both Traditional characters (as primary) and simplified characters (as secondary). From the questionnaire given out to students, 63% (26 students) think that writing is the hardest in learning Mandarin; therefore, along with the teaching material, the E-pen is introduced to reduce the complexity and overcome the hardship of traditional character writing.
