The study also investigated the differences of background variables on adolescences’ emotional intelligence. The present study surveyed 138 adolescences from new immigrant family and 151 adolescences from local families at grade 7, 8 and 9 in six junior high schools in Taoyuan City. The employed questionnaires included “Background questionnaire” and “Emotional Quotient Inventory: Youth Version, EQ-i:YV”. The data was analyzed by using PASW18 and the independent sample t-test and analysis of variance (ANOVA) were obtained to compare the differences of gender and individual variables in students’ emotional intelligence. The results showed that apparently there was a significant difference in emotional intelligence between the participants from the new immigrant families and from local families, especially in the sub-scale of “interpersonal relationship” and “accommodation.” There were also significant differences in gender. Female students were better than male students in interpersonal relationship, but male students were better than female students in “pressure management.” However, there was no differences in emotional intelligence among different grades as well as in birth orders. In conclusion, the emotional intelligence development of adolescents was affected by the environment, family background and primary caregiver’s emotions.
