A cross-sectional and descriptive correlational design was utilized. A convenience sample of registered nurses working at least for 3 months at a regional teaching hospital in Tainan was recruited from November 30 2016 to December 5 2016. A total of 360 structured questionnaires consisting of work value, fatigue and intention to stay scale were given out, of which 345 questionnaires were valid responses corresponding with 95.8%. The collected data was processed by the software package SPSS 20.0 for windows, and several statistical analyses, such as independent t-test, one-way ANOVA, Pearson correlation coefficient, and linear regression, were performed. The major findings were summarized as follows: 1.The nurses who have higher level of education, get married, work in the executive team and work in special unit have more positive work value. 2.The nurses who were older, single, have no children, shorter tenure, lower nursing ranks, lower nursing titles and work in emergency rooms and intensive care units were susceptible to fatigue. 3.Overall, work value was positively correlated with intention to stay; the relationship between job satisfaction and intention to stay reached statistical significance. Work fatigue was negatively correlated with intention to stay; the relationship between emotional exhaustion and intention to stay reached statistical significance. 4.The nurses’ intentions to stay varied by unit type; the nurses working in special units were most likely to remain in the present unit. 5.The factors influencing intention to stay varied by units. The factors influencing intention to stay of nurses working in emergency room and intensive care unit were associated with job satisfaction, sense of accomplishment and reputation. The factors with special unit were associated with emotional exhaustion and the factors with general ward were associated with job satisfaction and lack of humanization. The results of this study could not only provide hospital administrator with different strategies, to be references for nursing management and clinical practice, but also reduce nurses’ workload to improve nursing quality.
