Electronics and information technology has grown exponentially, become the main daily work and new form of work in science and technology libraries. As early as 1960s, the United States put forward the concept of specialized information centers. In the 1970s, there was a vague trend between information centers and libraries. By 2001, 24% of Taiwan's 2000 large enterprises had information centers or libraries. To explore the science and technology library services and librarians competency to comprehend the science and technology library to the parent organization of assistance to facilitate enterprises to establish science and technology library. There are three purposes in this study: a) Understanding the meaning, function and character of science and technology library in digital era. b) Understanding the services, work task and librarian role of science and technology libraries in Taiwan. c) According to the work task of science and technology librarians, discuss the competency of science and technology librarians. In order to obtain the research results, this study has formed the literature review to construct the draft of science and technology librarians’ role and competency indicators list, depth interview to collect the view of science and technology librarians and to attain the revision of competency indicators list. Finally constructs six ability area and 46 competency indicators of science and technology librarians. The results are as follows: a) In digital era, science and technology library has changed from traditional library to information service center. b) In digital era, function of science and technology library has changed to provide users of technology institutions can always access to technical information and services. c) Science and technology library services in digital era is characterized by strengthening the information services and reference services, in the depth and breadth. d) Science and technology librarians’ role in digital era is information managers, communication propagators and knowledge mediators are most recognized by interviewee. In accordance with the study results, this study also proposed several suggestions as following: a) Listing science and technology librarian’s competency indicators advice can be applied to science and technology library work and as work reference with education and training. b) Science and technology librarians can strengthen their foreign language proficiency after work. c) Science and technology librarians encounter difficulties in labor power and timeless, hoping to be the mother institution to attention importance and to have more human resources. d) For the future research proposal, it can further study the curriculum design of science and technology librarians, aiming at the function and service of science and technology libraries, surveying the users of science and technology libraries to understanding their expectation and view, improving science and technology libraries and move towards better development.
