It contains four kinds of catechins which are epicatechin, epigallocatechin, epicatechin-3-gallate, and epigallocatechin-3-gallate, respectively. The latter two are esterified catechins. The studies were antioxidant activities of ECG and EGCG which were ABTS•+ assay, DPPH assay and superoxide anion radical assay of free radical scavenging effect and 50% scavenging effect of concentration. The IC50 is lower, the scavenging effect is better. The results showed that the scavenging effects of ECG and EGCG were dose-dependent. In ABTS•+ and DPPH assay, the scavenging effects of ECG 20 μM and EGCG 20 μM were similar to those of Trolox 400 μM, Pyrogallol 500 μM or Vitamin C 568 μM. In superoxide anion radical assay, ECG and EGCG with the concentration of 100 to 200 μM were tested with 50% scavenging effect of concentration. The free radical scavenging effects of ECG and EGCG were good in ABTS•+ assay, DPPH assay and superoxide anion radical assay.
