In recent years, these LAB are thought to be beneficial to the host. LAB play an important role in the prevention and treatment of many diseases such as using Lactobacillus acidophilus to inhibit the growth of Clostridium difficile or Lactobacillus rhamnosus to decrease antibiotic-associated diarrhea symptoms. Due to increasing popularity and variety of exotic reptiles as pets, more reptiles clinical case of the gastrointestinal disease have been met. However, the studies about LAB strains of reptiles or LAB using in reptiles are rare. Thus, the objective of my study is to screen and characterize native lactic acid bacteria from healthy Iguana iguana fecal. The samples were homogenized in MRS broth and plated onto MRS agar and Rogosa agar, then incubated in anaerobic jars at 26 °C. Screening of isolated lactic acid bacteria based on the following criteria: Gram’s stain, catalase test, KOH string test, autoaggregation assay, coaggregation assay, cell surface hydrophobicity, acid and bile salt tolerance test, H2O2 production, antagonist activity and hemolysis. Among 84 isolates identified by 16S rRNA gene sequencing, Enterococcus faecalis (23.80%), Lactococcus lactis (22.61%) and Leuconostoc citreum (19.04%) are the majority of lactic acid bacteria strains. A combination of all screening trials show Enterococcus gallinarum (No.21), Leuconostoc citreum (No.81, 83), Enterococcus facecalis (No.02) and Lactococcus lactis (No.48, 58, 71, 69, 70) may be more suitable strains for potential application as an iguana probiotics supplement.
