The structure of consumers of stationery products has changed, and students are gradually becoming more level with white-collar workers in their need for stationery products. However, students and white-collar workers have different stationery needs. Students prefer stationery products with novel designs or special features. In contrast, white-collar workers prefer stationery that is practical and convenient; price is not their main consideration. In addition, because of fierce competition in the global market and taking labor, cost, environmental, and market considerations into account, most Taiwan-based stationary manufacturers have moved their factories to mainland China or Southeast Asian countries in pursuit of low cost and high profits while retaining their management and research and development departments in Taiwan. Hence, product innovation is a vital factor enabling Taiwan’s stationery industry to achieve international competitiveness. The study focused on the development of multicolor pens and integrated quality function deployment (QFD), the theory of inventive problem solving (TRIZ), patent search through market analysis, and technology roadmaps to implement a creative design and develop a new product. The TRIZ tools were successfully adopted to carry out development of safer, more environment-friendly, convenient, and practical multicolor pens with longer shelf lives. The integration of QFD, TRIZ, and patent searches ensured that the design met customer requirements, thus creating new opportunities in the stationery industry.
