Environment and resource management become a critical topic of developing economy and hence the sustainable development becomes an important issue among different nations around the world. However, sustainable development cannot effectively launch and practice. Luckily, parts of people increasingly pay attention to sustainable life experiment in the world. Among them, permaculture originates a sustainable agriculture skill, which integrates multi-aspects of human life including food, clothing, housing, transportation, education, and entertainment and these become tools of designing sustainable life. Permaculture has been brought into Taiwan since 1998, it gradually developed into several social media. The purpose of this study is to explore the permaculture’s connotation, value and challenges in Taiwan. The results are expected to be used as a reference for environmental sustainable development in Taiwan in the future. This study adopted a qualitative research method, in-depth interview. The researcher interviewed and discussed with 10 people who experienced successful practices in permaculture. The content analysis was used to extract 14 connotation scopes and 12 value scopes. The results show that Taiwan’s permaculture connotation is a social motivation by systematical thinking to pursue ecological sustainable value, which induces four higher-level value scopes including perceived social media, ecology, sustain, and transformation concept. The challenge of permaculture launched in Taiwan is how to establish several agricultural paradigms by the application of permaculture design. This study suggests that increasing public issues discussion, increasing the understanding of government department on permaculture, and promoting permaculture reflecting framework for a reference of environmental sustainable development and education popularized.
