The author, after having been away for years, has returned to Hualien for postgraduate studies and began to record bits and things about living in this region through images. During the author’s postgraduate studies, it has come to the author’s notice that Hualien and Taitung (H&T) abound with mineral resources, which are immensely popular with consumers. According to the author’s observations, commercially available jade artworks, even those using different varieties of jade, are mostly presented in traditional artwork styles. However, in the time when innovation and change are the norms, consumers expect more from artwork forms. Therefore, the author has attempted to apply the imagery of H&T to artwork development. The studies in visual communication and design at university have nurtured the author's aesthetic appreciation and creation and inspired the author to bring H&T jade artworks beyond traditional forms of expression by fusing H&T cultures and customs into their design. An in-depth literature review was conducted to further the author’s understanding of knowledge related to jade and papers on artwork design. An analysis of forms in artworks by professional jewelry designers laid the cornerstone for the creation in this study. The author also observed and recorded class teaching at Precious Metals Workshop in National Dong Hwa Universtiy as a researcher on visual arts education to see how Professor Shuya Lin guided and inspired the learners to design artwork styles with local imagery by applying the theories of parallel and lateral thinking. Development of creative potential has gained increasing attention and is longer limited to the realm of art. The parallel thinking method selected by the author can systematically help creators to achieve the ability of radiant thinking. In the image development of this creation, the same method is also employed to link visual images of the author’s affinity with this region, landscapes, multiethnic cultures and indigenous species unique to H&T and transform them into this creation in combination with the local medium, jade from H&T. In this way, jade artworks can be interpreted in new forms for the purpose of developing artwork designs with jade from H&T into a unique local industry that is both fashionable and aesthetic.
