Regarding the diagnosis and treatment of advanced-stage lung cancer during illness trajectory, not only has impacts on patients, but also affects the whole family. This study is evaluation the effectiveness of cancer family transitional nursing program on mental health, mastery of stress and family function among family caregivers of lung cancer patients.
This study is a single blinding randomized control trial. Thirty-eight patients and family caregiver dyads who newly diagnosed advanced lung cancer with first chemotherapy were recruited from September 2016 to May 2017 at medical center in Taipei. We were allocated to the experimental and comparison groups by computer-generated randomization. Eighteen patients and family caregiver dyads who received cancer family transitional nursing program the experimental group; and twenty patients and family caregiver dyads who received general lung cancer care the comparison group. We provided the family nursing interventions from newly diagnosed advanced lung cancer with first chemotherapy to two months. Assessments were undertaken at baseline (pre-intervention) and at 1, 2 months. Data on patients and family caregiver of anxiety and depression, stress mastery and family function, which used independent t test, chi-squared test, analysis of variance (ANOVA) and generalized estimating equations (GEE) for statistical analysis.
The results of shows cancer family transitional nursing program than general lung cancer care improved mastery of certainty (p= .043) and stress management (p= .032) for family caregivers at 2 months, were statistically significant differences. Cancer family transitional nursing program improved anxiety and depression for patient and family caregiver, and promote mastery and family function for family caregiver, were no statistically significant differences (p> .05).
Cancer family transitional nursing program used family-centered care. Assisting newly diagnosed lung cancer patients and family caregivers, successfully from healthy families to lung cancer families.
