Summary: | 碩士 === 國立高雄師範大學 === 特殊教育學系 === 105 === Correct Information Unit (CIU) and Content Unit (CU) are two measures of discourse that have been used to examine the function of verbal language communication in English-speaking patients with aphasia (PWA). In the current study, we modified and applied these two measures to analyze the discourse of 15 Chinese-speaking PWA. We compared PWA’s performance in the Verbal Narrative subtest of the Concise Chinese Aphasia Test (CCAT) to scores generated from the CIU and CU analyses. Results indicated that all scores from the CIU analysis were significantly correlated with the PWA’s performance in the Verbal Narrative subtest. Significantly correlations were also found between all scores from the CU analysis and the patients’ performance in the Verbal Narrative subtest, except for the %CU. Additional analysis was conducted to convert each patient’s scores in the Verbal Narrative subtest and the %CU into standard scores, and results indicated that the PWA can be further divided into three groups. Group 1 were PWA who showed a better ability according to the test results of the Verbal Narrative subtest but poorer ability according to the %CU. These were PWA who spoke less but could generate correct verbal messages. Group 2 were PWA who showed a better ability according to the the %CU but poorer ability according to the Verbal Narrative subtest. These were PWA who produced more spoken messages but their spoken messages exhibited a higher proportion of invalid content. Group 3 were PWA who showed similar ability according to the Verbal Narrative subtest and the %CU. Inconsistent patterns of verbal language use were seen in this group. Taken together, these findings suggest that the %CU is useful in detecting different verbal discourse patterns in PWA; the CIU analysis is also useful for obtaining supplementary information when comparing the pre- and post-test results of the the Verbal Narrative subtest of the CCAT.
