Background: To assess the role of incentive spirometry in rib fracture patients due to trauma in preventing pulmonary complications. Trauma injury accounts for 30% of all life years lost in the U.S.A. Chest trauma constitutes the major part of trauma. Incentive spirometry as a mechanical device helps in the lung expansion and has been commonly used to prevent postoperative lung atelectasis and pulmonary complications in patients who received cardiac surgery, lung surgery or abdomen surgery, but in rib fractures patients remains lacking. Method: The study was conducted on patients coming with rib fracture to accident, from June 2014 till May 2017. A total of 50 patients with rib fracture admitted through CS department were enrolled in this research after taking written consent form and agreed to be the part of this research protocol. The patients were divided into two groups by envelope technique, study group (n=24), who were advised to use incentive spirometry and the other was control (n=26) who were not advised the use of incentive spirometer. Both the groups were then managed on same protocol of pain killers. All patient s follow CXR on the day 5 and PFT on the day 7 after admission. Result: 68% were males and 32% were females. The groups were considered homogeneous in relation to the demographic. Study groups showed increased FVC and FEV1 significantly(p<0.001). Out of 50 patients 28 patient developed pulmonary complications [study group, n=7(29.2%), control group, n=21(80.7%)]. 25 patients developed hemothorax [study group, n=7(29.2%), control group, n=18(69.2%)]. 2 patients developed lung atelectasis[ all control group ]. 1 patient developed pneumothorax [control group]. Conclusion: The study shows that the use of incentive spirometry reduces the pulmonary complications and improved pulmonary function test of rib fracture patients. Incentive spirometry is a cost effective device to be used in rib fracture patients with no harmful effects. TUNG, HENG-HSIN 童恆新 2017 學位論文 ; thesis 95 zh-TW
