Therefore, considering the importance of the discussion between lecturers and students towards design teaching in practice, this study aims to explore the influ-ence of 3D printing on the discussions between lecturers and students or the impact on teaching practice. This study consists of three stages. In the first stage, the researcher interviewed with design lecturers at universities to understand the usage of 3D printing in class currently. The second stage, based on the findings from the first stage, involved three design dy-ads conducting a one-month design project, in which the dyads discuss their concepts with the lecturer. The three design dyads was assigned to present their concepts using one of three kinds media, i.e. 3D printing, hand-made model, and sketch. An inter-view with the design lecturer will be undertaken after the discussion session is com-pleted for further comprehensive summary and analysis. The result indicates that the application of 3D printing in current design program run by the colleges and universities is regarded as an assisting tool rather than the main core of learning. In terms of design teaching in practice, 3D-printing mainly take a role in actual practice for students rather than the main learning objectives. Students are required to take initiatives to build up abilities to learn the application of 3D printing equipment. During the design discussion, although the effect of handmade models is more complete compared with 3D printing models, models made by 3D printing actu-ally influence the interaction between lecturer and subjects and speed up the process and progress of the discussion. During the discussion, subjects used the immediacy of 3D printing to modify the design ideas which can display quickly to the lecture and the shape of model can be adjusted easily to avoid misunderstandings by the lecturer.
