Painting diary hence not only demonstrates the ways of showing artistic creations but also documents the significant records of children’s growth. This study recruited 20 kindergarten students as the parcipitants where the researcher collected their parinting diaries for one-year and analyses these diaries in terms of the contents and structure. The painting diaries were completed with neither the teacher’s instruction nor subject limitation. The purpose of the study is to explore the growth of children’s mental cognitions and the development of art types. Eventually, the research findings would serve new ways of children’s art education in Taiwan. The results reveal that the themes of sketch diary were not significantly converted whereas the forms of painting diary were going beyond expectation. Synthetically, the performances of research objects are closed to the phase between preoperational period and period of concrete operations. This phenomenon is generated by uncontrolled factors such as the backgrounds of children, the developments of physical and psychological conditions, and the differences of family educations. The study suggests parents should play as rowers rather than steerers in children’s drawing education or art education, and in the meanwhile should follow the self-consciousness of children and the feedbacks of living experiences of children.
