Summary:碩士 === 國立臺東大學 === 兒文所 === 104 === Helen Beatrix Potter created The Tale of Peter Rabbit in 1901. When reading Beatrix Potter : The Complete Tales, the researcher found that it is very interesting to see the animals inviting each other for tea in the stories. The researcher wants to understand the cultural background and family life of Beatrix Potter and to comprehend the influences on her style of story creation by Victorian dietary habits, social etiquettes and cultural values. Also, the researcher wants to explore the cultural deposit of afternoon tea as well as the enlightening and fascinating aspects of the stories created by Potter. This thesis consists of five chapters. The first chapter introduces the researcher’s background, motivation, purpose and prime bibliography for the research. The second chapter focuses on an introduction of Potter’s family life and her background. The third chapter explores the social etiquettes of Victorian culture that bear relation to the stories by analyzing the culture of gift-sending, Christmas celebrations, and the rituals of afternoon tea. The fourth chapter elaborates discussions of the enlightening and fascinating aspects of Potter’s stories by analyzing the cultural deposits of these art works. The fifth and final chapter summarizes the features of Potter’s stories that became classic works for hundred years.
