First of all, through the understanding of the satellite positioning systems, this thesis attempts to use Android application on mobile devices for the calculation of distance and speed. Then, by using the latitude and longitude given by the App, and the distance is calculated and the difference is compared with the measurement of the real distance. The results are used to evaluate the feasibility of the App. Secondly, this research picks a fixed sample route, and then uses existed Apps to measure the distance while moving with the different speeds of 15 km/h and 20 km/h repeatedly and compares its difference. After verifying the results, a GPS based distance App is developed via App Inventor 2 which is an easy development environment. The differences between the developed App and on the previous tested Apps are studied. It is helpful for the App improvements and makes a custom-made App on mobile devices for ourselves.
