The researcher designed an instructional program of variant character error correction suitable for the eighth graders. Thereafter, the researcher investigated the students’ immediate effects and preservation effects of correctly writing the highly confusing variant characters and phrases taught to them after the instructional program. The subjects of the research were 2 classes of 55 students with eighth graders from the junior high school in New Taipei City. The two classes were divided into two groups, a normal group with the traditional teaching strategies and another experimental group with the instructional program of variant character error correction teaching strategies. Two evaluation tools, including the posttest and the delayed test of variant character error correctional courses, were used in the study. The students’ learning effect was analyzed in quantitative data.The major conclusions include as follows: 1. The students in experimental groups had better learning effect of variant character error correction teaching strategies than the students in normal group. 2. After variant character error correction teaching strategies, the experimental group shows no significant diffference between the different genders of the students. 3. After variant character error correction teaching strategies, high learning achievement students of experimental group was better than low learning achievement students of experimental group.
