description 博士 === 臺北市立大學 === 中國語文學系 === 105 === Articles in Three Generations of Ancient T imes: Qin, Han, and Three Kingdoms Period (hereafter referred to as “Articles of Ancient Times”) is a gathering of classic scattered writings. Scholars in modern times were only able to give vague interpretations in some aspects but rarely find out new meanings since it contains large numbers and it concerns a great deal of dimensions. The key reason is that they did not verify the text but analyzed shallowly the explanation of Notes on using “Articles of Ancient Times”. In order to avoid the obstacles which the predecessors faced, this thesis explores mainly the structure of the original writings and discusses the brief biography of the author, the composition of the writings, author’s remarks, etc. As a master of the evidential research during the Qianlong and Jiaqing Eras, Yen Ke-Jun was familiar with the whole Six Classics and was extremely prestigious at that time. While approaching this subject, some perspectives were discovered. First, in Articles of Ancient Times, Yen sought to succeed Writings of the Past Dynasties of Mei Ding-Zuo and Collection of 103 Writers of Zhang Pu and look for the connections with Articles in Three Generations of Ancient Times and Qin Dynasty and Articles in Northern and Southern Dynasties of Peng Zhao-Sun. Second, the are three main components in this study. 1. The first one expounds the arrangement of the catalog and the evidential research which the author made. The order he made shows a historical style. He imitated the editing principles of Annotated Catalog of the Complete Imperial Library . For example, he put the category Buddhism before the category Daoism and also created a new category “Warlords who created empires”. He studied and arranged carefully the materials which include various bibliographies such as classic works, ancient commentaries and inscriptions. He noted the reference in remarks but casted no reference for historic biographies. 2. The discussion about compiling the articles focuses on two points: (1) The ways of compiling: i. a complete section without additions and deletions. ii. a section with some additions, deletions, revisions and combinations. iii. sections from the same book but different paragraphs with additions, deletions, revisions and combinations. iv. sections from different documents with additions, deletions, revisions and combinations. This research aims to show that Articles in Ancient Times not only transcribes the writings but also possess a lot of academic values from the viewpoint of the compiling and bibliography to others who studied the gathering of scattered writings. (2) The order of the writing styles in Articles of Ancient Times applied the principles which sourced from Five Classics and this study tried to discuss the connections between similarities and dissimilarities of sorting. 3. The procedure of reviewing the author’s remarks helped trace that Yen employed the remarks to express his own points of view, the records of stating the documents and then brought up reasonable explanations and results. Among these, the historical resources were applied much more than other kinds of genres and it means to explain the whole process of every events. Furthermore he studied and corrected the written words and related personages. Overall, the academic studies in the Qing Dynasty concerned much about classical studies which were based on classics, histories and phonologies and also on astronomy, geography and excavation. All these pushed him to edit such a great model of gathering scattering writings and his efforts go far beyond those of the successors.
