Min-Jen Cheng 鄭閔仁 碩士 國立雲林科技大學 會計系 105 This study examines whether the passage of Tax Agent Act affects the overlapping businesses and operating performance of proprietorship audit firms in Taiwan. Further, we investigate the association between overlapping businesses and operating performance of proprietorship audit firms after the passage of Tax Agent Act (post-act period). Empirical data sources from the 1992-2014 Survey Report of Public Accounting Firms in Taiwan, published by Financial Supervisory Commission. Total overlapping businesses are classified into three categories, including tax and consultation (TAXMAS), corporate registration (CR) and accounting and bookkeeping (ACC). Both TAXMAS and ACC businesses in the post-act period are superior to that in the pre-act period. While no significant difference occurs in the revenues of CR between pre-act and post-act periods. This study defines operating performance as total net income, net income per employee, and product per employee. Both total net income and product per employee in the post-act period outperform that in the pre-act period. However, net income per employee in the post-act period is inferior to that in the pre-act period. Both TAXMAS and CR positively relate to but ACC negatively associate with operating performance. Specifically, the extents of total net income and product per employee effects of overlapping businesses are higher in the post-act periods. Finally, total overlapping businesses revenues are higher in the post-act periods and positively relate to operating performance. Further, the extents of total net income, net income per employee and product per employee effects of overlapping businesses is higher in the post-act periods.
