碩士 === 元智大學 === 應用外語學系 === 105 === This study aims to investigate the use of the Discourse Marker (DM) yes and hai by different NNSs between Taiwanese Students (TSs) and Japanese Students (JSs) in a Synchronized Computer-Mediated Communication (SCMC) setting. The data include 28 hours of conversations by different TSs and JSs in different groups. The two main foci of this study are the functions of yes as applied by participants, and how SCMC and culture affect their use of yes. The findings show that Taiwanese Speakers use slightly more yes compared to JSs. They even used notably more hai when compared to JSs. Also, the results show that using non-verbal communication in SCMC might increase the use of yes and hai. The functions of yes and hai used by participants are also affected by their roles, such as leading the conversations and building rapport.
