Nations have advocated supporting the employment of middle-aged and elderly people to avoid the shortage of labor. This research explores the cases of eight middle-aged persons who have successfully been re-employed through a qualitative research using semi-structured in-depth interviews. The goal is to understand how they were successfully re-hired, their motivation in promoting employment and their experience in job-seeking preparation in the context that Taiwan’s support and protection for re-employment of middle-aged and elderly people are not yet sound. According to the interview results, this research found that the middle-aged and elderly people's motivations for re-employment include: solving economic problems, passing the time, dissatisfaction with current job, believing that they are still young, believing that they are capable of working, and expectations for their future. Their preparations for re-employment include: developing professional skills, returning to school for further study, accumulating practical experience, accumulating job-seeking experience, maintaining physical strength, overcoming the obstacles in terms of family care, and increasing social interactions in order to accumulate contacts. Pre-employment learning preparation needs include work knowledge and skills, self-marketing, thinking outside their comfort zone, and making adjustments to employment strategies. Their learning experience after re-employment includes managing the hindrance of their employment in their role of providing family care, high self-requirement to adapt to the new work as quickly as possible, adapting to unfriendly people in the workplace, and maintaining health and strength and relieving stress through exercise. The learning preparation methods for re-employment include participating in training courses, certification courses, university education, and postgraduate education. The timing for re-employment preparation takes place when facing obstacles finding a job, when their current job requires such preparation, and when the subjects want to meet their internal expectations. Based on the abovementioned research results, recommendations are made to middle-aged and elderly people, corporate HR departments, government agencies, and follow-up research projects as a reference for the effective use of middle-aged and elderly human resources and the promotion of successful re-employment for middle-aged and elderly people.
