Summary: | 碩士 === 中國科技大學 === 視覺傳達設計系 === 107 === The patriarchal society has a rigid awareness and requirement for gender roles, resulting in stereotyped behaviors and characteristics which sometimes cause gender-related problems. When individual behaviors do not meet the expectations of mainstream values, they may be discriminated and degraded.
From personal experience, my father was influenced by male stereotypes to a level where he could not show pain and bereavement even during the funeral of his own wife, upholding the belief that man should be strong at all time.
During high school, I observed male classmates who were more sensitive and gentle were socially excluded because they did not meet the traditional gender requirements which society and mainstream culture promotes.
These combined experiences prompted me to research the phenomenon of patriarchal oppression in visual images while in university, and discovered in the field of photography that anti-patriarchal themes are not well studied by men, hence prompted me to pursuit a project in this area to further my understanding.
The exploration of gender- related imagery led to the photographic concept of male liberation as the main axis. Focusing at first on exploration of male gender symbols under patriarchy; then moved to understanding of historical and theoretical connotations of male feminine tendency in a male dominant culture; at the end, and finally the foundation of creative rituals in the form of dare to reveal aesthetics.
The theme of "Sorry, I'm male." is used to explore male issues that face different aspects of emotions, careers, and family relationships, by use of photography to capture the essence of the topic. Arranging and deconstructing gender stereotypes to present images of male liberation.
