As for frequently used residential bathrooms, there has been lesser emphasis on design. Due to the aging of the global population, the need for well-designed bathrooms that can be used across diverse ages and health conditions becomes more and more significant. In recent years, promoting the applications of Universal Design Principles to create a more accessible living has been discussed as a crucial issue. Applying Universal Design Principles to residential bathrooms with key factors of added design value is essential to elevate user experience in the aging society. The purpose of this study was to investigate factors of added design value that contribute to shaping divergent levels of psychological experience. Case studies of five-star hotel bathrooms were examined as an initial step to summarize key design factors. Then, key design factors of residential bathrooms with larger room scales were scrutinized. The relationship between five-star hotel bathrooms and residential bathrooms are exceedingly close. As five-star hotels emphasize accommodation experience, the criteria for designing hotel bathrooms used by diverse users are high. Hotel bathrooms capable of coping with heterogeneous users coincide with Universal Design Principles. Moreover, the hotel bathrooms that exhibit extraordinary beauty and convey touching experience are models for high quality residential bathroom designs to follow. This study reviewed literature and examined multiple cases of five-star hotel and residential bathrooms to differentiate levels of psychological perception among added design values of residential bathrooms based on Universal Design Principles. The results of the study indicated that there are six factors of residential bathroom added design value, which are “the look and feel of the design, clarity, beauty, inspiration, a sense of welcome, novelty. Furthermore, this study revealed that there is high correlation between the growth need of Maslow’s hierarchy of needs and factors of the added design value of the right experience, the good experience, and the touching experience. The combination of Universal Design Principles and various factors of added design value can be categorized as basic universal design, advanced universal design, and touching universal design reflecting levels of psychological experience in Maslow’s hierarchy of needs theory.
