Description
Summary:碩士 === 健行科技大學 === 資訊管理系碩士班 === 106 === This study develops a "virtual reality English learning system" and discusses the effectiveness of the system on English learning in junior high school and the impact of multimedia design in virtual reality. The participants are 72 students in a grade nine in a junior high school in New Taipei City in Taiwan. The experimental method is a one-group pretest and posttest design. Before the experiment, students are asked to finish the learning style questionnaire and investigated the experience of playing games, and also conduct pretests of English proficiency; during the experiment, students’ answering process are recorded completely and posttest pf English proficiency are implemented to explore the effect of using virtual reality learning system. After the experiment, presence questionnaires and focus interviews are conducted to gain deeper insights of students’ experience of using virtual reality English learning systems. The research results show that this virtual reality English learning system can improve the students'' effectiveness of communicative English. Further analysis of the research results also pointed out that students with different learning styles and different game-playing backgrounds have no significant difference in the effectiveness of using virtual reality systems to learn English. In other words, students of different backgrounds improved after using the systems and made similar progress. In addition, according to interviews and the analysis of questionnaire results, the mode without captions in the virtual reality is closer to reality, but the no caption mode makes it easier for students to become immersed in the system because of insecure and unfamiliar of teaching material. The findings of the study are as follows: (1) The effectiveness of communicative English learning is enhanced through the virtual reality English learning system; (2) The difference of learning styles will not affect the effectiveness of using the virtual reality system to learn English; (3) The effect of caption displaying or not is based on students'' familiarity with the teaching materials.
