Among them, ground-penetrating radar (GPR) has been most widely adopted. GPR is one of nondestructive detection techniques and it is able to locate underground pipelines within shallow surface. GPR is of considerable help to road excavating, asphalt paving, and pipeline renewing and maintaining. Compared with the conventional open-cut method, GPR has its great effectiveness, benefits, and convenience when dealing with the complex underground pipelines in urban areas. Taking Zi-Qiang Road in Ji-An Township, Hualien County, as the focal measured area, this study aimed to utilize GPR in the investigation of underground pipeline leakage. This road surface has collapsed, so this study particularly evaluated and analyzed this section of road in order to further explore the relationships between the road collapses and their underground pipelines. Six measured lines evenly going parallel and perpendicular to Zi-Qiang Road, the researcher applied GPR image profiling technique to realize the underground soil condition, further providing reference for future improvement and repairing. This study found out that the location of the collapse on Zi-Qiang Road was the same as that of underground pipeline leakage surveyed via GPR. The cause of the road collapse was that the pipeline leakage made the surrounding stratum formation become flabby. Additionally, the cracks on the road were probably caused by the disloyal backfill of pipeline construction, which led to the soil moisture content being changed by rain penetration.
