碩士 === 輔仁大學 === 音樂學系 === 106 === The October Revolution in Russia in 1917 overthrew feudalism. Sergei Vasilievich Rachmaninoff (1873-1943), who suffered as a result of the war, left Russia and went to America. He never returned to Russia. As a composer whose career occurred in both the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, Rachmaninoff was influenced by such Russian composers as Pyotr Ilych Tchaikovsky (1840-1893) and Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov (1844-1908). By continuing romanticism inherited from the elder composers, Rachmaninoff combined Russian melody and his own musical traits. On one occasion, Rachmaninoff accepted the suggestion of Fritz Kreisler (1875-1962) to compose the Variations on a Theme of Corelli, Op. 42 in 1931. This work became a representative piece of his late style. This thesis is a discussion and analysis of the Variations on a Theme of Corelli Op. 42 of Rachmaninoff, looking at both his life and his compositional style. The thesis is consists of five chapters. Chapter One introduces the research topic, motive, and method. Chapter Two examines Rachmaninoff's life and compositional periods. Chapter Three is an analysis of his most commonly used compositional techniques. Chapter Four is an analysis and interpretation of the Variations and its background. Chapter Five is the conclusion of the research.
