More and more sharing economy startups are founded these years. The sharing economy will inevitably become a major part of the global economy. Carpooling (also car-sharing, ride-sharing and lift-sharing) is the sharing of car journeys so that more than one person travels in a car, and prevents the need for others to have to drive to a location themselves. In an age in which more people are travelling greater distances than ever before, there has been a growing emphasis on finding ways to lessen the burden of travel on both the individual and the environment. Carpooling platform service is the outcome of combing carpool and a sharing economy. BlaBlaCar is the world’s leading long-distance carpooling platform service company based in Europe, operating in 21 countries and boasting around 60 million users in 2018. This research uses the development and data of BlaBlaCar as a case study to study sharing economy. Then compared with carpooling platforms in the United States, China, and Taiwan in a global perspective, and tries to answer following questions: “What are the success factors of BlaBlaCar?”, “Are there other successful carpooling platforms like BlaBlaCar in other countries? If no, why? If Yes, How? “. By analyzing the data, it comes to the conclusion that building critical mass is one important factor for carpooling platforms and all other peer-to-peer based sharing economy businesses.
