The purpose of this study was to explore influencing factors that affect the oral health status of nursing home residents. A cross-sectional, descriptive correlation research design, aimed at the residents of a nursing home in Taipei City, taking a total of 130 participants to complete the questionnaire, and taking the oral health assessment scale (OHAT) - non-dental professionals Edition as an evaluation tool. SPSS version 20.0 was used to analyze the data. The results of the study showed that 130 subjects were between 51 and 100 years of age, with an average age of 84.12 years. Residents’ age, stroke, using musculoskeletal drugs, nasogastric and urinary catheters, and oral cleaning times three times a day were factors affecting oral health (p < .05). Further subdividing OHAT scores into scores of < 4 points and ≧4 points, finding that for every one year increase in the age of residents, the risk of oral health (Odds) increased by 3.5%. The risk of health was 74% less than that of residents who have not brushed their teeth with a toothbrush. The results of the study can provide a reference for long-term care institutions. In addition to focusing on factors that affect oral health, the OHAT assessment scale can be used to assess the oral health of institutional residents and to intervene early in related to oral care measures.
