Because of the introduction of innovative Western ideologies, intellectuals have strongly advocated for science and democracy, regarding science as the sole gospel and religion as superstition. For their own personal interests, central and local officials, warlords, as well as local ruffians and landed gentry would reconstruct temples in schools, destroy statues of Buddha, and banish monks or nuns. In this harsh environment where Buddhism was severely persecuted, advocates of Buddhism realized that a reform of Buddhist doctrines, rules, and possessions was required for the religion to adapt to social transitions. The objective of this study was to explore the factors and effects of the occurrence of the anti superstition movement, with the aim being to determine the relationship among aspects of politics, religion, and culture. Through data collection, compilation, and analysis, this study intended to investigate the causes of the revolution, the effect of the movement on Buddhism, and the endeavor of Buddhist disciples as well as the society as a whole to revive this religion.
