Therefore, the aim of this study is to understand the relationship between smartphone addiction and academic achievement of junior high school students. The difference between smartphone addiction and academic achievement results from various of background variables which include gender, grade, the first time contacting smartphone, year of smartphone used, daily using time, daily using period, using function, using purpose and contacting person are investigated. The 319 samples comprise 7th, 8th and 9th grade students who are randomly chose from 12 classes in S junior high school in Yilan County. According to the student’s response on “Smartphone addiction scale” and their final scores of Chinese, English, Math, Social Science and Natural Science in the first semester in 2017-2018, this study analyses relationships between smartphone addiction and academic achievement, by using descriptive statistics, t-test, ANOVA, and Pearson product-moment correlation coefficient. The main findings obtained in this study are described as follows: 1. The situation of students’ smartphone addiction is at an intermediate-low level. 2. The 8th grade students have slightly higher smartphone addiction than 7th and 9th grades students does. 3. Students who contact smartphone earlier have higher severity on smartphone addiction. 4. Students with more years of smartphone experience, more daily using time, and used smartphone in the time period of 00:00 to 06:00 and 18:00 to 00:00 have relatively higher smartphone addiction. 5. The main activities of using smartphone are social and internet shopping. Whereas, the main purpose of using smartphone were playing games, stress relaxing and other classmates also using. Students who contact online friends have relatively higher smartphone addiction. 6. Female students show better academic achievements than male ones. 7. Students who have more daily using time, uses smartphone in the time period of 00:00 to 06:00, main activities of using smartphone were commuication, playing games, sending and receiving e-mail and on line shopping, main purpose of using smartphone are make new friends and playing games, contact online friend, are have worse academic achievement than others. 8. It is found that there are significant negative correlation between smartphone addiction and academic achievement. 9. The smartphone addicited students have worse academic achievements than non-addicited ones. Finally, base on the above findings, some suggestions are proposed as references for teachers, students, parents, societies, and future researches.
