Some audience decide whether to watch the movie or not by watching its trailer. People can understand the movie’s plot and how it was made through the trailer. The trailer has a significant impact on its box office. The thesis aims to conduct the trailers that won the Best Action Movie Awards in 2011 to 2016’s Golden Trailer Awards in America as research subjects. The thesis also employs “content analysis” as the research method. First, with “Three Act Structure” proposed by a French scholar Syd Field, the movie’s plot is divided into Act One, Act Two, and Act Three. Next, the trailer is categorized into visual, audio, and star ones; they are (1)visual—the types of shots, transitions, and subtitles; (2) audio—sound designs; (3) stars and directors, which conclude the approach that each element is manifested in the trailer. The finding points out that the close-up shots are the major shots among the visual ones, because through the shots closer to the protagonist, one’s characteristics and facial-expression changes can be presented in great detail. Cuts are the major effects exploited in transitions, and then fade-in and fade-out effects. It is because that cuts are the most undisturbed ways of transition, and the effects of fade-in and fade-out will make the audience persistence of vision on the scenes. Scenes are mostly adopted in Act Two, and then Act One and Act Three. Because the plot in Act Two is the climax part in the movie, it is shown more animatedly and nervously. The subtitles will show the basic information of the movie, such as the name of the film, the film distribution cooperation, the release date, and so on. In the trailer, many concise and lively phrases and words are interspersed to convey the content of the film. The combination of diegetic sound, non-diegetic sound, voice over, pitch, loudness, and rhythm are mainly applied in audio. Use sounds to represent the different levels of texture particularly, and sounds are turned into mute to a certain degree, which accentuate the tremendous sound for the next moment and aim to enhance the audience’s feelings through the stark contrast. Stars and directors are mainly employed in those world-famous actors once nominated or winning awards in film awards ceremonies, or the director’s and main actors’ and actresses’ names are showed in the trailer to attract more audience to watch the movie. The thesis aims to explore and discuss the editing modes of the film trailers, and the correlation between the trailer and the film.
