Methodology: The quantitative research was used and purposive sampling was conducted on outpatients with type 2 diabetes mellitus in the hospital. Research instruments consisted of the demographic data, the eating behavior questionnaire and the dietary knowledge questionnaire. Data were collected from 1st January to 30th March, 2018. Descriptive statistics and analysis were used to analyze data. The relationships between the precent factors and eating behaviors were calculated by ANOVA and Pearson’s correlation using SPSS 16 Results: The survey of 146 outpatients with type 2 diabetes at the clinic of Traditional Medical Hospital, Ho Chi Minh City, using Self-Management Dietary Questionnaire shown that eating behaviors of patients were diveded into 2 major group, high level (score of 101-132) and moderate level (score of 67-100), about 63.0% patients were at moderate level, while 37.0% patients were at high level. Among the 146 patients, 108 (74%) patients were female. The mean age was 63.55 ± 10.56 and 85.6% were married. About 45.2% had finished secondary school. The average income of patients was 11.69 ± 8.60 million VND and 41.8% had income from 6 to 10 million VND. Dietary knowledge total mean was 0.81 ± 0.12. The monthly family income had strong association with eating behaviors in which patients with higher income had higher eating behavior level (p = 0.013). And also higher educational level also mean higher eating behavior level (p = 0.028). Patients who are below 60 years old had the highest score in eating behaviors. Conclusion: Eating behaviors of outpatients with T2DM were at moderate level. Monthly family income and dietary knowledge were independent predictors of the eating behavior. So, patients should be educated about nutrition to promote eating behaviors to control blood sugar levels among type 2 diabetic patients. The results help nurses to determine the educational level, income and dietary knowledge level of the patients so that it is easier for them to intervene into the patients eating behaviors.
