Description
Summary:碩士 === 國立交通大學 === 客家文化學院客家社會與文化學程 === 106 === Hsinchu County Cyonglin Golden Lion Dance Troupe, established by Cheng Pao-Ning in 1990 and run by the Cheng family in Xiashan Village, connects the family, promotes traditional martial arts learning, and carries forward the activities and spirit of Hakka martial arts lion dance. The lion mask used by the Cheng Family Golden Lion Dance Troupe is the “open-mouth lion” whose mouth can open and close; hence the name “Hakka Lion”. Hakka Lion is a performance art that integrates elements of martial arts, music, drama, and dance. “Quan Peng Lion” (literally “full-show lion”) is a performance that truly demonstrates the martial arts feature of the Cheng family. In 2014, Cheng Hsiang-Hao, the first son of Cheng Pao-Ning, felt that members who know martial arts in the family were getting older, and were afraid that the tradition would be lost, and thus actively organized the Hsinchu County Hakka Martial Arts Lion Dance Development Association. The association was approved by Hsinchu County Government on November 14 of the same year as a “Hsinchu County Traditional Art and Cultural Heritage Hakka Lion Preservation Group”. The present study reviewed existing literature, carried out field study that conducted in-depth interviews with troupe members whose family or ancestors once supervised apprentices, collected performance data related to Quan Peng Lion, and made them into observational and image records. After analysis, organization, categorization, and interpretation, it is found that the formation and changes of the Cheng family lion troupe and Quan Peng Lion are combinations of a variety of martial arts and performance forms. Quan Peng Lion is a large-scale martial arts performance that traditionally showcases a family’s force, and is divided into four sections, opening, Chinese boxing, arms (five-color weapons), grand demonstration, and closing. Quan Peng Lion is an important cultural heritage with historical significance that should be preserved and valued. Nevertheless, as the society today changes, troupe members are often people of bigger age, and training budgets are insufficient, making this traditional skill difficult to be passed down. Schools and associations alone are not enough to preserve this unique folk art; therefore, the results of the present study will provide government agencies for reference and it is hoped that Hakka Lion can be preserved and passed on from three aspects, including preservation, teaching, and policy-making.
