Take the environment protection issue as example, bicycle industry has herding effect in responding to the global environmental protection policy. To accommodate hyper competition, firms tend to search for an alternative innovative business model to create niches and obtain sustainability. Since 1950, Taiwanese bicycle industry has transformed from OEM, ODM to OBM era. However, to the knowledge of the author, only a few researches has documented the effect of alternative model on the performance of the underlying industry and has no inclusive conclusion yet. Thus, the objective of this study is to examine the relationship between alternative business models, OEM and hybrid production model, and firm performances of the Taiwanese bicycle industry. The empirical implementation processed as a two-step approach. First, a DEA model is utilized to estimate the cost efficiency and technical efficiency indexes of 8 listed sample bicycle firms over the period from 2009 to 2017 as proxy of firm performance. Then, Tobit regression is adopted to capture the relationship between firm performances and alternative business models. The empirical result of this study shows that OEM firms outperform the hybrid production system in both cost efficiency and technical efficiency. Thus, the evidence reveal the significance association between alternative business models and firm performances in Taiwanese bicycle industry. The research further shed a light on the application of the frontier approach in management literature. Huang, Ming-Hsiang 黃明祥 2018 學位論文 ; thesis 41 zh-TW
