I conducted a survey for this study including the two aspects of "identification science inquiry" and " verifying control experiment"with 151 student participators. With the result of the survey, I examined the differences in the students' performance to identify scientific inquiry and verify the ability of controlled experiments between students of different grades and genders. The major conclusion of this study are as follows: 1. In the performance of "identifying scientific inquiry", the performance of the ninth grade students was significantly greater than that of the eighth grade students (p < .001), while there was no significant difference between the seventh grade and the ninth grade students. 2. In the performance of "identify scientific inquiry" and " verify control experiment", there was no significant difference between male and female students. 3. The ninth grade students had excellent performance in identifying "experimental process" and verifying the "operational change" 4. Regardless of the grade students were in, the category that "identifies data" is the one with the most incorrect answers in the test, showing that students have more difficulty in "identifying data".
