Summary:碩士 === 國立中山大學 === 中國與亞太區域研究所 === 106 === South Korea is one of the most significant economic, political and military powers in the Asia-Pacific region. Furthermore, in military and security dimension apart from Japan, South Korea is one of the most important allies of the United States in the Asia-Pacific region. The end of Cold War in late 1980s and early 1990s significantly influenced world’s political, economic, military or security order, also in East Asia. In case of South Korea, the end of Cold War has given possibility to establishing bilateral relations with the Soviet Union, China. During recent quarter of century, South Korea significantly improved economic, as well as diplomatic and political relations with China. Furthermore, China has become South Korea’s main trade and economic partner, and also China has become main destination of South Korean investments. South Korea has developed trade and economic relations with China to respond on rising China or finding opportunities by South Korean enterprises in Chinese market. Moreover, improving relations between Seoul and Beijing can be considered as a balancing strong influences of the United States in South Korea. Nonetheless, on the other hand close economic ties with China and close military ties with the United States frequently put South Korea in dilemma. The recent issue of installation the American THAAD System in South Korea caused Chinese put strong economic pressure on Seoul by boycotting South Korean products or limit travelling to South Korea. Nonetheless, the THAAD issue is an clear example, South Korea nowadays is in dilemma, which side to choose the United States or China.
