The developing Shan Puppet Theater is the main research object. The research methods include participant observations of the performances and interviews of theater members to explore and describe the contents of the music, repertoire, and performance mode, as well as the operation and the meaning of how Hakka hand puppetry is positioned in the context of cultural and social development.The thesis is divided into five chapters. The first chapter is an introduction, which explains the motives, purposes, topics of discussion, and research methods. The second chapter explores the background and the development of Hakka hand puppetry. Through the literature reviews of hand puppetry and Hakka traditional performing arts, I hope to further understand the factors that shape the rise and current development of Hakka hand puppetry. The third chapter is to document and describe the performing and teaching activities of Shan Puppet Theater in the form of actual participations, so as to understand the situation and development of the troupe.The documentation of the teaching is mainly based on the structural analysis of the process and content of two different types of teaching attributes. The on-site teaching participations and interviews provide the internal viewpoints that are not easy to reveal. As for the performances, Isummarize the content and mode of the performance, and make a concrete structural narrative of the actual performing process to examine the creativities and innovations in the performance. The fourth chapter is the analysis of the script and music based onthe actual performance to present the types of the script and the variations in the performance. In addition, I try to generate a set of mode of the use and characteristic of Hakka music in the performance. The fifth chapter is the conclusion.Through a synthesis discussion of the development, promotion, trial, innovation and current situation of Shan Puppet Theater, I further provide suggestions for the future development of Hakka hand puppetry as well as subsequent related researches.
