Hong Kong Union Press was related to the Authors from China after Chinese Civil War, and the American anti-communist strategies in the Cultural Cold War. Many of the Union Press members stayed in contact with some literati and intellectuals in Taiwan. The Union Press publications The Chinese Student Weekly, China Weekly and College Life connected to Hong Kong and Taiwan literary fields from 50s to 60s. The young Qiong Yao won the editor’s estimation, and The Chinese Student Weekly, China Weekly and College Life published her short novels several times. Some of these short novels were included in the selections from Qiong Yao: Chao Sheng and Xing Yun Cao. However, the investigators rarely put these short novels in its historical context; therefore, my thesis tried to refound how Qiong Yao entry into Hong Kong Union Press system, also tried to analyze her short novels about genre, writing strategy and the difference between her early works. In Taiwan, the Qiong Yao researches usually used local readers’ and commentators’ literary criticism, so this thesis would like to add the Hong Kong readers’ discussion about her novels and films in 60s. By observing on The Chinese Student Weekly, the most influence publication of Union Press, the thesis could add Qiong Yao’s early writing activities in Hong Kong. The final goal of the thesis was to put these short novels at the original historical context, hoping that could increase more aspects of the literature communications between Taiwan and Hong Kong.
