Based on energy saving and engineering requirements consideration, 110 ~ 140 lm/W pressure sodium lamps had been used for road lighting design. However, with advantages of continuous rise in light efficacy of LED light sources, lower energy consumption, longer life, excellent color rendering in any color temperature, and easily control properties, the Energy Bureau of the Ministry of Economic Affairs (EBMEA) promoted a series of projects phased out the traditional mercury lamps by LED light sources. The city roads used LED source for lighting fixtures came true already and being the main light sources in the future no doubt. However, the long distance of stop sight of the freeway caused the serious and carefully concerns due to fast driving and safety reason. The management department is still at a cautious stage of piloting LED road lights. By analyzing the functionality, stability, reliability, maintenance period and maintenance costs of LED products today, this research studied and evaluated whether the basic requirements of safety and comfort can be met simultaneously based energy-saving policies. This thesis focused on the feasibility assessment of LED road lighting used in national road lighting engineering. The domestic and foreign LED lighting luminaires for highway are analyzed and compared about specifications and light distribution to find out the improvement strategies for LED road light which provided energy saving and well function for driving.
