In this modern society, economic is slumping, birth rate is decreasing and old people percentage is growing. Due to lack of land but new residential buildings booming in urban area, the property market keeps in a high price and citizens could not afford new-build houses. With a cultural tendency to old house refurbishment, people are thinking that houses are not necessary brand new, but are emphasized the architectural spatial-spiritual connections. Refurbishment of old houses is fashion, is the trend nowadays.
The most common material for refurbishment is light steel, which is used on the roof, outer wall (so called makeup) and warehouse mostly. Due to the advantages of wide range, flexible, fast, easy, clean, low cost construction, this research discusses the architectural design of retrofit in urban townhouse by the using of light steel.
This research has done literature review, regulation investigating and case study over old townhouse refurbishment. After analyzing the differences of materials, methods and aesthetical aspects between domestic and foreign cases, this research demonstrated a local project which is an old townhouse adapted the method of light steel.
This research also performed questionnaire. The result shows that people know few about light steel. Taiwanese people are open-minded about retrofit, but the imagination of retrofit in urban townhouse by the using of light steel has not been established. It remains exterior adding but not merges with old house.
