博士 === 東吳大學 === 日本語文學系 === 106 === Abstract The "face" of humans gathers the sense organs such as sight, hearing, smell, taste, and touch. In another word, the "face" of humans includes all five sense organs (eyes, ears, nose, tongue, and skin). We cannot recognize individuals from body parts such as eyes, hands, and feet, but we can recognize races (white, black, or yellow race), gender (male or female), age (elder or younger), appearance (beautiful or ugly), and facial expression (delight, anger, sorrow, or happiness). In addition, in the process of building human’s social life, we often communicate by using the expression of "face". It shows that "face" performs more important tasks and functions than other body parts. 　This dissertation consists of seven chapters. Chapter 1: To state the research motivation and purpose, literature review, subjects, methodology and the structure of the dissertation. Chapter 2: To examine the semantics, and the classification and the use of meaning of “face” in the Chinese-Japanese Synonym Dictionary. Moreover, to compare the semantics and the use of word meaning between two countries. Chapter 3: The collocations of "~face" are target subjects by using "SICYOUBUNNKO NO HYAKUSATSU CD-RONBANN" corpus. Based on the type of part of speech, to classify and analyze the front constituents of "~face". At the same time, to examine the meaning of joints of "face" and to compares the similarities and differences in each type of part of speech. Chapter 4: The idiomatic sentences of “face” are target subjects by collecting 7 word idiomatic dictionaries. To compare the inclusion status, type of part of speech, sentence structure, and meaning usage of idiomatic sentences of “face” in each idiomatic dictionary. Chapter 5: The chapter is comprised by two parts. First part, to compare the “face” (Japanese word), semantics of "face" (Chinese word) and the synonym "face" (loanword) in Japanese dictionaries and to investigate the consistency and differences among the three. Second part, to explore the use of “face” (Japanese word), “face” (Chinese word), and “face” (loanword) in each category by using Corpus (BCCWJ). Chapter 6: To compare with the expressions and usages of “color vocabulary” and “feeling vocabulary” between “KAO” in Japanese and “face” in Chinese. Chapter 7: Conclusions of the dissertation. To state of research findings of each chapter and to propose the further research topics.
