Description
Summary:碩士 === 樹德科技大學 === 人類性學研究所 === 106 === The main purpose of this study is to understand the psychological journey of the sexual experience of men with spinal cord injury when facing significant changes in their lives after a spinal cord injury. This study explores whether they are able to hold a positive outlook toward the challenges faced, their sexual satisfaction in intimate relationships and whether these two factors have an effect on one another. This study adopts a qualitative research method and the research findings are shown as follows: 1. Personal psychology aspect of persons with spinal cord injury: (1) Self-confidence and self-esteem level may be increased with the continuous companionship from their partners as they give encouragement and support while facing difficulties and resolving issues together. (2) Although different types of spinal cord injuries have different impacts on sexual functions, sexual satisfaction may still be achieved with a proactive and positive attitude when resolving issues. 2. Physiological aspect of persons with spinal cord injury: (1) Penile erection is still possible despite the lack of a sexual partner and sexual satisfaction may still be achieved as erection conditions improve. (2) Injuries affect both psychogenic erection and reflexogenic erection, and sexual satisfaction may be improved significantly by taking Viagra to get an erection. 3. Social and interpersonal relationship aspect: (1) Injuries affect the ability to perform actions independently which result in a change of sexual patterns and cause different feelings, but sexual satisfaction in intimate relationships may still be achieved. (2) Injuries may also cause extreme psychological trauma, however, sexual satisfaction may still be improved with the support of their partners as both persons rediscover sexuality. Finally, discussions are carried out in this study based on the above research conclusions, and references are provided for the needs of persons with spinal cord injury, their partners and for medical healthcare units in service provisions. Recommendations for future research directions are also suggested.
