By changing the concentrations of zinc nitrate and sodium hydroxide, three different ZnO nanostructures (ZnO-A、ZnO-B and ZnO-C) were obtained. These ZnO nanomaterials were characterized by various techniques, including X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, and BET specific surface area analysis. The antibacterial properties of the synthesized ZnO nanomaterials were evaluated using the bacterium Escherichia coli, while their photocatalytic activities were examined using the Rhodamine B dye. Of the three ZnO nanostrucutures, ZnO-B exhibited the largest specific surface area and displayed higher antibacterial and photocatalytic activities than the other two. To enhance the antibacterial and photocatalytic capabilities of ZnO-B, Cu2+ modified ZnO-B (Cu-ZnO-B) were prepared by soaking ZnO-B in a CuCl2 aqueous solution. The results show that the Cu2+ modification had a small effect on the antibacterial property ZnO-B, but led to a significantly higher photocatalytic activity. Under the illumination of visible light, Cu-ZnO-B showed 90% dye degradation efficiency after 4 h, considerably higher than the 71% degradation efficiency of ZnO-B.
