Seven participants invited in the interview are parents of the researcher’s students. The study was geared to understand children’s English learning situations from the perspective of parental involvement, guided by their perceptions and attitudes toward English language teaching in Taiwan. Based on the data, three conclusions can be made. First, when parents see English as a utility, they would inevitably tag English with rather short-term purposes. Second, the expectation gap parents have for children’s English learning can be divided into authenticity gap and institution gap. The former exists between real use situations and classroom situations. The latter refers to programs in elementary schools and cram schools. In addition, parental involvement could be an essential key to the success of children’s English learning, in terms of how human capital and physical capital can be exercised. 楊韻華 2018 學位論文 ; thesis 72 en_US
