I majored in performance while my partner specialized in choreography. The production premiered on June 7 and 8, 2014, with a total of two performances. The sixty-minute long performance included four pieces, in which I played the main characters of three. After the production, I re-examine myself through this report. I believe it was a significant landmark in my dancing career. This MFA production report examines pieces from Changing Room, which are “Floating Flowers,” “The Closet” and “The Practitioner.” The report is made of five chapters, each gives in-depth analysis of the three pieces and description of the rehearsal process. It explores the concepts of the choreographer and the thoughts of the performer, examining how the performer presents the expected images in the choreographer’s mind, and explains the difficulties and solutions during the rehearsal process. I inspect upon performing through various perspectives and to ponder on how to deepen the performance and to shorten the distance among the audience, the choreographer and myself. Finally, the report reviews and organizes my self-reflection during the rehearsal process, stating that this performance made me more determined to pursue a career in the performing arts and, more importantly, made me stopped simply pursuing training blindly in bodily techniques. Instead, it had allowed me to discover different ways of body presentation in different dance pieces, to adjust myself in different partnerships, to understand the choreographers’ motivation in creating various pieces, to dig into a piece’s historical context and to analyze their forms and styles. All these have made me pay deeper attention to the exquisiteness of dance. This report is also a record of the steps I have taken through different stages. By turning the whole production process and performing experience into written words, it has not only given me deeper understanding of the production, but also provided me an opportunity to organize and conclude my self-reflection into text, which I wish to continue doing so as a professional performer.
