Everything tends to reach the state of balance, from nature physics to human psychology, and a sudden change in life is like a forceful intervention. We are bound to be unbalanced and then try to get recovered. Taking the idea of balance as a starting point, I try to understand how it is intervened and destroyed by external forces, and how does it is balanced again after the wreckage. I have therefore proposed “Equilibrium and Intervention” as the topic of the thesis and analyzed it through four of my artworks. In the reference discussion of the thesis, we explored the location sensor Gausstoys which was used in two of my artworks list below and the tangible user interface. Following the topics of “balance in artworks” and “intervention in intervention art”, I exemplified some artworks and made the analysis. All the artworks discussed in the thesis show the state of balance and unbalance through the intervention of the audience, and each of them involves into unique contents under the idea of balance. In “Forces in Equilibrium-Magnetic”, the digital method is used to perform the analog of unbalance. The “magnetic balance” is taken as the interactive interface, when the audience touch the magnets, it will oscillate, meanwhile triggering the changes of sounds and the visions projected on the wall. “Forces in Equilibrium-light” is an installation in the shape of seesaw. I tried to achieve the imagination that light weights. When the audience illuminates the seesaw through the light of mobile phone or flashlight, the seesaw will move up and down as if the lights force it. For “Tilted Space” artwork, I tried to present the connection between the virtual and reality. It is an interactive installation based on the position of the audience, when the viewer gets closer, the platform set on top will incline toward the direction of the person and the small ball on the platform will start to roll because of the moves. Beneath the small ball, there is a tablet screen, and the picture on it will change along with positions of the ball. For “The Movement” artwork, the digital method is used to simulate the physical flow of water. It is an installation device based on the interaction between human and the water. When the audience touches the water in the pool, the water will spill over and overflow to the seesaw, it will also trigger the LED light arranged in array on the seesaw.
