Description
Summary:碩士 === 臺北市立大學 === 中國語文學系 === 106 === Musical stems from America in the twentieth century, where Jazz, tap dance, and comedy play impacted on its development. In recent years, Taiwan has been introducing a mass of classic musicals from England and the United States, and it has been flourishing. Musicals draws the audience’s attention via expressing the character’s emotion, the story lines, and the dramatic tension by combining music, spoken dialogues, acting, and dance. This research is focusing on Greenray Theatre Company’s (GTC) original Taiwanese musicals in the 90s. We will probe into the musicality and the literariness, reflected by its contents, via analyzing the interview of the director and the arranger. First chapter is the introduction of the motivation of research and current situation, literature reviews, the statement of the research methodology, and the structure of the paper. Second chapter has three sections. The first section starts from introducing the origins of musical and then discussing the general situation of original Taiwanese musical development. Next section sketches the current observation of musicals in Taiwan. Taiwanese theatre companies are investigated in the last section of this chapter. We will focus on the theatre companies, which their main focus is original musical. Third chapter is the main chapter of this paper, which explores musical scripts of GTC in the 90s. In this chapter, we will discuss GTC’s original musicals in the 90s from three different aspects: 1) the creation background of the director, 2) the analysis of the structure of scripts, and 3) the discussion of lyrics. We will be focusing on these three musicals, “Necties & High-heeled Shoes”, “Blame It All To the Draft”, “A DizzyWoman, I Do I Do!”. Next chapter is aiming at analyzing more details of the music of those three musicals we have mentioned in the previous chapter. This includes, 1) the type of the music and analysis of musical form, 2) the combination of vocal and instruments, and 3) the musicality and the literariness. GTC has been developing more than 20 years. Since the first original Taiwanese musical, Necties & High-heeled Shoes, in the 90s, they have been keeping the amount of their musical productions. With the status of GTC in Taiwan and their popularity among young people, GTC must have a huge impact in musical composition in theatric culture or the taste of the audience. Therefore, chapter five will narrate the review of GTC’s original Taiwanese musicals in the 90s and the future prospects of original Taiwanese musicals. The last chapter summarizes the previous five chapters and proposes the follow-up research. Thus, we can foresee the future and development of the original Taiwanese musicals.
