The purposes of the research include the understanding of the influences historical background may have on Zhu xi's thoughts, the establishment of Zhu xi's principles on learning, the analysis on the spiritual connotations of Zhu xi's principles and the discussion on their inspiration for education. The research findings are as follows: 1. Zhu xi's thoughts have affirmatively been affected by his time. He devoted to writing so as to rectify and improve social morality, and to persuade the mass as well. 2. The metaphysics in Zhu xi's principles on learning accords with Doctrine of the Mean, the framework of his principles conform to "Three creeds and Eight entries” introduced in Da Xue (the great learning). 3. The principles on learning deal with the incorporation and improvement of one's knowledge and virtue, including 6 key points: using the idea of “no difference between temperament and disposition” to explain that everyone should engage in learning; converting temperament by cultivating one's morality; the conduct of learning should take the examples from ancient sages' words and deeds; the internal cultivation within is the continuous spiritual practice focusing on the fundamental; the external cultivation is the autonomic behavior from individual to all; the quest for perfection is a process to “retain the Celestial Law and terminate the Human desire”.
