Thanks to a proper mechanism design, the axial length of the transmission hub can be shrunk. Two kinds of driving clutches are used. One is a slider axial clutch, and the other is an axial clutch combined with the push pawl and pull pawl. An embodiment design of the proposed four-speed transmission hub has been completed. The proposed design also includes the brake function. The strength analysis was also completed by employing commercial finite-element analysis software ANSYS. Finally, a prototype was manufactured and installed into an existing wheelchair for testing.
