The “Shikoku Henro” is a 1,200 kilometer multi-site pilgrimage route of 88 temples, which has been recorded in the Japanese history for 1,200 years. However, there are few literatures on this serious leisure and its experiencers. The attempt of this thesis is to get the first-hand information in person as the experiencer of Shikoku Henro, and then to reflect in-depth the attractive reasons why people being engaged in such pilgrimage regardless of Japanese or not. There are four purposes of being the experiencer of Shikoku Henro in person: first, exploring the differences between the Shikoku Henro and the ordinary walking trip through personal experiences; second, inquiring attractive reasons of the Shikoku Henro; third, the influences on personal body, mentality, and spirit after the Shikoku Henro experience; and four, the relevance of pilgrimage route to personal philosophy and values. The guidelines for “Action Research” are adopted during the whole self-experience study. During each route, not only the self-experience, but also the motivations and thoughts of travelers, met from all over the world, were recorded in a semi-structured interview with any mobile phone camera, recording pen, and hand writing note carried in the backpack. The conclusions are: 1. the most touching heart feature of Shikoku Henro is the distinct reception culture of local residents to the experiencers; 2. the major attractive and revisiting reasons of Shikoku Henro are religious culture, versatile landscapes, and friendly people; 3. during the hundreds of kilometer course, the exhaustive feeling is indelible; however, some factors of the experience of flow, such as a loss of reflective self-consciousness and the autotelic experience once appear in some routes; 4. by walking along the Shikoku Henro, the trimming, conversion, and transformation of the heart might happen, confirming the serious leisure a kind of spiritual promotion practice.
